Bunions

Bunion, bunion pain, big toe joint pain, inflammation

A bunion, also known as hallux valgus, is a bony protrusion that forms at the joint where the big toe meets the foot. This deformity can cause the big toe to angle inward toward the other toes, resulting in a noticeable bump.

Symptoms

Bunions may present with various symptoms, including:

  • A visible bump on the side of the foot
  • Pain or tenderness around the big toe joint
  • Redness, swelling, or inflammation
  • Difficulty finding comfortable footwear
  • Corns or calluses developing on the bump or between toes

at home treatment

  • Wear comfortable, properly fitting shoes with a wide toe box to reduce pressure on the toes.
  • Use bunion pads or cushions to cushion the bony protrusion and reduce friction.
  • Apply ice packs and take anti-inflammatories to reduce swelling.
  • Incorporate gentle stretching exercises to improve flexibility and strengthen the muscles around the toes.

when to see a specialist

If a bunion deformity is causing you persistent pain, difficulty walking, or interfering with daily activities, it's crucial to seek evaluation and treatment from a specialist.
